There is nothing worse than reaching for your vacuum after a big spill only to find that it has stopped working. Especially after the holidays when extra guests and glittery decorations have become the norm, a good working vacuum is key to keeping your home tidy. We put together a list of the best caring practices for your vacuum so that you can be sure it’s ready to clean when you need it to.
Vacuum Cleaning Tip #1. Check Your Bag Regularly
Many people think that they only need to empty their vacuum bag when it’s full but that’s not the case. Your bag needs space for the air to circulate when sucking up debris. If the bag is completely full the debris will have nowhere to go and will end up right where you don’t want it, back on the floor. Your bag should have a line on it to show when you should empty it. This rule is important for vacuums without bags, too.
Vacuum Cleaning Tip #2. Clean the Brush Roll
Hair, thread, and fuzz can get wrapped around the roll and cause your machine to perform poorly. Be sure to check your vacuum’s brush roll every 5-6 uses. Use scissors to free the fuzz and lubricate the bar once clean.
Vacuum Cleaning Tip #3. Replace The Belt
The belt should be replaced every 6 months to a year depending on use. It’s usually obvious if the belt looks out of place or damaged. You don’t have to bring your vacuum to a repair shop to replace the belt; it’s actually simple and easy to do at home. Just follow the instructions that come with the new belt or with your vacuum’s manual.
Vacuum Cleaning Tip #4. Remove Excess Debris
If you’re sensing a theme here, you’re right. Vacuums gather a lot of particles and it’s important to keep the pathways clear for optimum performance. Other areas that can get blocked are the air passages, the brush roll housing and the hose. Clean these spaces regularly for best results.
