If you have carpets in your home, there’s a good chance you’re going to have carpet stain issues at some point. From kids, houseguests, pets, or even an oops with that glass of wine – you need to be prepared to act quickly in the case of a stain situation.
We’ve gathered the most common carpet stains, and what you can do to remove the damage from your beautiful flooring.
Carpet Stain Culprit #1: Pet Stains
When you have pets, you’re going to have accidents. Dog and cat urine can be extremely damaging to your carpet and make your house smell if not dealt with immediately. Follow this process to reduce the damage:
- Clean up any debris and soak up any excess moisture.
- If the stain has already dried, use a carpet stain-cleaning product specifically for pet stains.
- Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water and spray onto the stain. Allow the spray to soak into the carpet for several minutes.
- Blot until the stain is gone and the spot is dry.
Carpet Stain Culprit #2: Spilled Wine or Juice
From party guests to excited kids, wine or juice can easily be spilled on your carpets. In these cases, your main concern is getting the dark dye out of the carpet. Follow this process to remove the stain:
- Gently blot the stain with a dry white towel. Avoid rubbing!
- Mix ¼ cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon dish soap, and water in a spray bottle (You can also use carpet stain removal products).
- Spray the stained area liberally and allow to soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Blot the stain until it has been removed.
Carpet Stain Culprit #3: Mud and/or Dirt
Kids and pets both attract dirt and mud. The real trouble happens when that muddy mess makes its way to your clean carpets. Like many other stains, tackling the stain the right way will help you avoid lasting damage. Follow this process to remove the stain:
- Let the mud dry.
- Slowly vacuum over the area to remove any loose dirt and debris. Vacuum in all different directions to make sure that you are picking up everything.
- Mix one teaspoon mild dish washing detergent to one cup of lukewarm water. Double this as needed based on the size of the stain.
- Use a white cloth to blot the solution into the carpet, switching out towels until the stain is gone.
- Use a fresh cloth or paper towels to blot the area dry.
