Ah, snow season! The winter wonderland, Christmas lights, sledding, and hours of family fun. Followed rapidly by wet puddles, soggy pets, mud, dirt, and random piles of winter gear all over your house. Then there are always the holiday parties and visiting relatives to prepare for.
Before the winter cleaning blues get you down, we’ve put together these tips to help you keep your house tidy all season long.
#1: Winterize Your Home Entry Areas
You will likely not be able to eliminate all of the mess that comes from winter weather, but proper preparation can certainly help to manage it.
Invest in a rough mat for wiping mud off of boots outside the door. Immediately inside, have an absorbent mat ready to collect any wet boots (or paws). You can also store outdoor towels in an entryway chest to wipe any missed water spots.
Consider installing coat hooks by the door for your family and guests to easily hang their gear without creating messes throughout the house.
#2: Organize Your Storage Spaces
Most families spend more time indoors during the winter months. Combined with frequent holiday guests, and there is an increased need for organization in the house. When your home is organized, cleaning and maintenance becomes much easier to keep up with.
Start with your bedroom closets and remove any outdated or poorly fitted clothes. This is a great opportunity to give back to your community be donating these clothes to your local shelter or charitable organization. It also helps you keep the clutter at bay.
Box away and store your summer goods. You’re not likely to have a need for beach towels in January, so make room for cleaning rags or snow gear in these spaces. Instead of increasing the “stuff” in your storage spaces, get yourself in the mindset of trading one thing for another.
#3: Dust. Often.
Have you ever noticed that your home is dustier in the winter? This is because the air inside the house is so warm and dry. Dust clings to ceiling fan blades, window moldings, books, and electronics. If you have pets, it may be even worse.
Commit to dusting at least once per week to keep the dust to a manageable level. This is benefit the overall look of your home, as well as your health.
