If you’ve been following our guide to keep your house spring-clean for the holiday season, you may have gotten tripped up on the all too familiar challenge of creating an organized closet. Here are our favorite tips to bring your closet from drab to fab!
Organized Closet Tip #1: Streamline Your Hangers.
Get rid of your mismatched wire hangers and invest in a set of the same style and color. This is the easiest way to give your closet a uniform look that appeals to the eye right off the bat.
Pro Tip: Velvet hangers will ensure that your camisoles and dresses don’t slip!
Organized Closet Tip #2: Roll & Place.
Along with mismatched hangers, loose items on shelves or your closet floor make your space feel cluttered and overwhelming. For bulky items like sweatshirts and scarves, buy a few wicker baskets. Roll the items so the front is facing out and place them together in the basket. This way you can easily see what’s what and grab the item you want quickly.
Pro Tip: Save wine boxes to slide flip-flops and sandals into.
Organized Closet Tip #3: Stow Away Out of Season Favorites.
We know your husband loves his Hawaiian style t-shirts but if they are front and center during the winter months they are only getting in the way. Instead of keeping seasonal favorites hanging all year long, give your closet some breathing room by placing the items in canvas storage containers.
Pro Tip: If the storage containers won’t fit in the closet slide them under your bed or on a shelf in your laundry area.
Organized Closet Tip #4: Have a “See Ya” System.
One of the biggest culprits of an unorganized closet is items that are outdated, in poor condition, or never used. Create a system for yourself that will help you weed out the space suckers. Next time you go to grab for a shirt and then ultimately decided not to wear it, place a ribbon on the hanger or turn the hanger to face the opposite direction. Every couple of months, take the items that have been marked out of your closet and reassess. If you know you won’t wear it again donate it.
Pro Tip: When it’s hard to get rid of something even when you never wear it remember this, the more space you create in your closet the less overwhelmed you’ll feel and the more space you’ll have to fill it with something you really love.
